Some interesting developments have taken place over the past week, there's been multiple trades. Free agent signings are still going on, rosters today look very different for some teams than they did on opening night. That's why for this weeks power rankings, we'll be talking about every teams biggest acquisition so far.
These power rankings are not a rankings based on the owners or admin team as a whole but rather the subjective opinion of the author.
1. D.c. Tribe
Record: 2 - 0
Rank Last Week: 1
Week 2: Won 55 - 6 vs. TAC
Next Week: @ PIT
Biggest Acquisition: LB Tee Knight
D.C cruised to another win over Tacoma this week to the surprise of no one. So it's no surprise of no one that they stay first in the power rankings this week. It was a tough decision to settle on Tee Knight as the most impactful acquisition considering they also picked up Zaire Agustus and Coco Raccoon in the same offseason. Overall the offseason champions award goes to DC and we'll see if they can maintain this scorching pace over the rest of the season.
2. Huntington Beach Voyagers
Record: 2 - 0
Rank Last Week: 5 (Up 3)
Week 2: Won 38 - 24 vs. DET
Next Week: @ DAL
Biggest Acquisition: RB Auston Wilson
Huntington Beach leapfrogs a few teams here with a 2 score victory over a Detroit team with revenge on their minds. Auston Wilson has been proving through the first two weeks that he's worth the price that Huntington Beach paid to acquire him picking up another 157 yards with 2 TD's in the win this week. As the saying goes in Huntington Beach, the more things change, the more they stay the same.
3. Pittsburgh Roughnecks
Record: 2 - 0
Rank Last Week: 2 (Down 1)
Week 2: Won 34 - 10 @ CHA
Next Week: vs. DC
Biggest Acquisition: QB Action Jackson Jr.
While not necessarily the margin some expected Pittsburgh to win by, they still worked out another convincing win. Pittsburgh's looked like a new team as of late, rounding into the form they had back in season 11 when they made the Eastern Conference Final. A big reason for that is the return of their passing game. Pittsburgh and lackluster passing attack used to be almost synonymous, but with AJJ's arrival alongside standout veteran WR Sir Lancelot the teams passing attack has looked much more lethal than it has in years.
4. Detroit Hellhounds
Record: 1 - 1
Rank Last Week: 3 (Down 1)
Week 2: Lost 24 - 38 @ HBV
Next Week: @ NYM
Biggest Acquisition: WR Montezuma Popoco
Detroit lost a battle against Huntington Beach this last week but still remains in the top 5 of the league due to the strength of the game. Detroit had a relatively quiet offseason this year, no big trade acquisitions and a pretty small free agent pool. It's safe to say Detroit did their dirty work through the draft this year, but for the purposes of this article we don't count players acquired through the draft. Which leaves WR Montezuma Popoco as the teams biggest offseason acquisition. For the role he's filling he's doing a good job at it and shouldn't be worried about hitting the free agent market any time soon, although he could be an interesting name to keep an eye on closer to the trade deadline.
5. st. Louis archers
Record: 1 - 1
Rank Last Week: 6 (Up 1)
Week 2: Won 28 - 21 vs. DAL
Next Week: @ TAC
Biggest Acquisition: S Tommy Gunz
Last week I said that St. Louis looked like they could hold their own against a strong Huntington Beach team and this week they put the pieces together for a big win over Dallas. St. Louis looked in control for most of that game and their defense looked to be on point. Tommy Gunz is in part responsible for some of that growth in defense, now with 11 total tackles through the first two weeks. The future is looking bright in St. Louis and a playoff push may be just around the corner if they keep playing like this.
6. Miami Trident
Record: 1 - 1
Rank Last Week: 8 (Up 2)
Week 2: Won 23 - 15 vs. NYM
Next Week: vs. CHA
Biggest Acquisition: DE Rhino Dobbins
Miami redeems themselves slightly against a New York team that's starting the year off rough, but they still look a far cry from where they were just last season. Maybe the players are partying too hard on Miami Beach before the games but Miami seems to be moving through molasses right now. Thankfully for them, they acquired DE Rhino Dobbins from Pittsburgh over the offseason and he's quietly been helping the Miami defensive line explode onto the scene. The team already has a staggering 7.5 sacks on the season and you can credit that directly to how the defensive line has been playing to start the year.
7. Dallas Dragons
Record: 1 - 1
Rank Last Week: 4 (Down 3)
Week 2: Loss 21 - 28 @ STL
Next Week: vs. HBV
Biggest Acquisition: RB Spider Webb
Dallas squandered an early opportunity to rise to 2 - 0 and give themselves a strong lead on a playoff spot to start the year. Instead they looked sloppy in rookie QB Jack Nitro's first career game. Perhaps the sudden locker room jolt played some mental games on them, either way they're looking like they'll be in a dogfight now. RB Spider Webb didn't do much in the game against St. Louis as he got slotted into the FB spot, but he still had a 4 TD game against Charlotte and is among the best RB's of the year because of that one game.
8. New York Mafia
Record: 0 - 2
Rank Last Week: 9 (Up 1)
Week 2: Loss 15 - 23 @ MIA
Next Week: vs. DET
Biggest Acquisition: LB Gus Pac
New York's had a tough start to the season in part because of the difficulty of their schedule and it doesn't get any easier next week with Detroit. At least they'll be at home for the game. New York only made three moves this offseason and of the three, Gus Pac is arguably the biggest name of the bunch so he'll take the crown here, but New York would love to see a bit more out of him than the meager 5 tackles he has so far this season.
9. Tacoma Eruption
Record: 0 - 2
Rank Last Week: 7 (Down 2)
Week 2: Loss 6 - 55 @ DC
Next Week: vs. STL
Biggest Acquisition: K Assassin Moone
Tacoma seems to be grasping at straws right now, while DC may have been a near impossible task the indecision on player contracts may come to haunt them. Originally I had LB John Smith pegged as a slam dunk for this spot, but then Tacoma released him and he got picked up by DC for a fraction of the cost. Moone however has at least performed will for this team making all of their kicks so far, limited though they may be. Their punting stats have been strong though averaging around 50 yards per punt so far.
10. Charlotte Royals
Record: 0 - 2
Rank Last Week: 10
Week 2: Loss 10 - 34 vs. PIT
Next Week: @ MIA
Biggest Acquisition: RB Doc Boone
Charlotte's rebuilding and they did manage to close the gap in score this week which is an improvement. But losing by 3 scores instead of 5 isn't a very high bar to clear. It is however clear that Charlotte intends to rebuild this year so perhaps there's a silver lining to the loss. In terms of making the team more competitive this year though, the biggest acquisition has to be re-acquiring RB Doc Boone. The Charlotte run game has looked stagnant at best without him, so it will be nice to see him breathe some life back into the Charlotte offense.
